Common Ant Species in the Cleveland Area

Not all ants behave the same way or respond to the same treatments. The three species most commonly encountered in Cleveland-area homes and businesses each present distinct challenges.

Carpenter Ants

At 1/4 to 5/8 inch long, carpenter ants are the largest pest ant in the region. They tunnel through wood to build nests rather than eating it, which means a mature colony can contribute to structural damage over time. Large black ants appearing indoors during winter or early spring are a common sign of an active indoor colony.

Odorous House Ants

They form large colonies with multiple queens and nest readily in wall voids, under sinks, and behind appliances. Multiple queens make odorous house ant colonies particularly resilient: losing workers to a surface spray barely slows them down.

Pavement Ants

Pavement ants nest in cracks in driveways, sidewalks, and foundation slabs and are common invaders in Cleveland homes. They enter structures at ground level in search of food and can establish trails that run from the foundation into kitchens and pantries. One additional note: Winged ants found indoors are sometimes mistaken for termites. A professional inspection can confirm which insect is present, and it matters because the treatment paths are entirely different.

Why DIY Ant Control Usually Falls Short

Store-bought contact sprays address what’s visible. They kill forager ants on surfaces but don’t penetrate the nest or reach the colony queen. As long as the queen survives, the colony keeps producing workers and the infestation can continue.

Repellent sprays near active ant trails can make things worse through a process called budding, where a threatened colony splits into multiple satellite nests and spreads the infestation rather than containing it.
